Chinese CCTV manufacturers banned!

In an unusual event, Hikvision along with any other security cameras made by companies subject to Chinese security law have been banned from being installed in new institutions in government and council buildings. It’s not very often a blanket ban like this happens, and, on such a widely used piece of hardware. Hikvision, the largest affected, is partially owned by the Chinese government.

Hikvision cameras are very commonplace in CCTV installations due to their price point and a wide array of devices to utilise, supplying over 60% of schools! Hikvision and Dahua, another partly Chinese government-owned manufacturer, in total, were used by 73% of local authorities, 35% of police forces and 63% of schools in the UK.

"The review has concluded that, in light of the threat to the UK and the increasing capability and connectivity of these systems, additional controls are required,” Dowden wrote in a statement to parliament.
